Real Madrid have fined Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde €500,000 each following a heated training ground clash that has exposed deeper tensions inside the dressing room.
The altercation, which took place at the club’s Valdebebas training base on Thursday, escalated after a physical training session and spilled into the dressing room, where the two players reportedly confronted each other.
Valverde came off worse in the incident, sustaining a head injury described as a cranioencephalic trauma. He was taken to hospital and has since been ruled out of this weekend’s crucial El Clásico clash against FC Barcelona.
Real Madrid confirmed disciplinary proceedings had been opened and concluded, with both players accepting responsibility and apologising.
“The players expressed their deep regret for what happened and apologised to each other, the club, their teammates, coaching staff and fans,” the club said, adding that both had agreed to accept any sanctions imposed.
The club opted for financial penalties rather than suspensions, closing the case internally as it looks to stabilise the squad.
Tchouaméni returned to training on Friday, while Valverde continues to recover from the injury.
Valverde later sought to downplay the situation, insisting reports had exaggerated what happened.
“My teammate didn’t hit me, nor did I hit him… what happened has been blown out of proportion,” he said, describing the clash as an unfortunate incident rather than a deliberate fight.
Despite that, he admitted the episode had damaged his reputation and reflected the difficult moment the team is going through.
The incident comes at a critical point in Madrid’s season, with the team under pressure both domestically and in Europe.
Barcelona are on the verge of clinching the La Liga title and could seal it in the upcoming Clásico if Madrid fail to win, a scenario that would underline the club’s struggles.
In the UEFA Champions League, Madrid have also failed to impose themselves as in previous years, raising questions about the team’s competitiveness.
The clash between Tchouaméni and Valverde is not an isolated case.
Reports indicate a series of disagreements within the squad in recent weeks, including a separate heated exchange involving Antonio Rüdiger and a teammate.
There have also been tensions between members of the squad and coaching staff, as well as disagreements involving senior players, reflecting a dressing room under strain.
The situation has been compounded by managerial instability, with Madrid reportedly searching for yet another coach, potentially their fourth in two years, amid differing views within the club’s leadership.
Names such as José Mourinho, Jürgen Klopp and Didier Deschamps have been linked with the role as the club weighs its next move.
While dressing room clashes are not uncommon in elite football, the scale of the fine, the injury to Valverde and the timing ahead of a decisive Clásico highlight the seriousness of the situation.
For Real Madrid, the priority now is restoring unity and focus, but with results slipping and tensions rising, the club faces a critical moment both on and off the pitch.
