The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has released a simple guide to help salaried workers file their annual income tax returns.

In a public notice, the tax agency explained the step-by-step process for employees who earn income only from their jobs and need to file their returns through the iTax portal.

According to KRA, the process starts with taxpayers logging into the iTax system using their KRA PIN or National ID together with their password.

Once logged in, users should go to the “Returns” section and select the option labelled “ITR for Employment Income Only.”

After selecting the return type, the system will automatically display the return period on the e-return page. Taxpayers are required to confirm that the period shown is correct before clicking the “Next” button to proceed.

In the next step, employees are required to confirm their gross employment income under section F of the form. KRA advised taxpayers to check these figures carefully using their P9 forms, which are usually issued by employers.

The fifth step involves confirming the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax that has already been deducted from the employee’s salary during the year.

Taxpayers are then required to review all deductions listed in the system under section T. These include statutory deductions such as pension contributions, the Affordable Housing Levy, the Social Health Insurance Fund, as well as personal relief where applicable.

After confirming both income and deductions, the taxpayer moves to the next stage, where they review all the information provided before submitting the return.

Once everything is verified, the user clicks the submit button to complete the process.

After submitting the return, the system generates an acknowledgement receipt confirming that the filing has been successful. The receipt can either be downloaded immediately or accessed later through the email linked to the iTax account.

KRA said the simplified eight-step guide is part of its efforts to make tax filing easier for employees across the country.

The announcement comes as the deadline for filing annual income tax returns approaches, with the authority urging Kenyans to submit their returns on time to avoid penalties.

The agency also recently introduced a phased filing approach aimed at making the process faster and more convenient for millions of taxpayers.
