The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) official in Kisumu over an alleged Sh100,000 bribery scheme involving tax arrears.

The suspect, identified as Hughes Obilo, is an officer attached to the KRA Debt Refunds Department in Kisumu.

According to EACC, Obilo allegedly demanded Sh100,000 from a construction company in exchange for clearing tax arrears amounting to Sh4.5 million from the iTax system.

He was arrested on Monday, September 14, after EACC investigators mounted an operation following preliminary investigations into the allegations.

The commission said the officer was caught while allegedly receiving Sh30,000 as part of the money he had demanded.

“Preliminary investigations established that the suspect had demanded Kes. 100,000 from a construction company,” EACC said.

The money was allegedly meant to facilitate the irregular clearance of the company’s outstanding tax arrears and enable it to obtain a Tax Compliance Certificate.

Obilo was subsequently taken to Kisumu Central Police Station, where he was booked for processing and statement recording.

The arrest comes as the anti-corruption agency continues to target public officials accused of demanding bribes while delivering government services.

EACC said it would continue taking action against individuals who abuse public office for personal gain.

The suspect is expected to face further legal proceedings following the completion of investigations into the alleged bribery.

The arrest and allegations against Obilo have not been tested in court, and he remains innocent unless proven guilty.
