Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced a new system integration that will change how exporters file Value Added Tax (VAT) returns starting May 1, 2026.

In a notice issued on April 28, the authority said export data captured in the Integrated Customs Management System will now be automatically linked to VAT returns submitted via iTax, a move aimed at improving accuracy and reducing manual errors.

Under the new arrangement, validated export values will be prefilled in VAT returns once customs documents are approved. The integration will apply to exports destined for the Single Customs Territory, foreign markets, Export Processing Zones, and Special Economic Zones. KRA said the system is designed to streamline tax reporting and ensure that only verified export transactions are reflected in filings.

Exporters and clearing agents will be required to include the exporter’s PIN alongside a valid TIMS or eTIMS zero-rated invoice number when submitting export documents. The authority noted that only values validated within the customs system and linked to the correct documentation will be accepted in VAT returns.

It also confirmed that exports of taxable services will be automatically captured based on transmitted eTIMS invoices, urging businesses to align their documentation processes ahead of the rollout.
