The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental conservation and community development by supporting the launch of the second phase of the Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme.
The launch, held on Saturday, was presided over by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and brought together government agencies, private sector players and local communities involved in the sustainable management of the Kaptagat ecosystem.
The event marked the completion of the programme’s first decade, during which Kaptagat Forest underwent extensive restoration, enhanced protection and initiatives aimed at improving the livelihoods of communities living around the forest ecosystem.
Activities began with a marathon that attracted hundreds of participants in support of forest conservation and environmental sustainability.
As part of its support for the initiative, KPA contributed KSh1.5 million towards the programme, underscoring the authority’s growing investment in climate action and ecosystem restoration efforts.
The next 10-year phase of the programme will focus on protecting restored areas, conserving biodiversity and expanding livelihood opportunities for communities surrounding the forest.
KPA also commended the programme’s patron, Chris Kiptoo, for his leadership in championing environmental conservation and community development initiatives.
The authority noted that its support for the Kaptagat programme complements its broader sustainability agenda, which has earned international recognition in recent years.
