Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has highlighted a series of government projects underway in Nyeri County, including the expansion of the Thika-Kenol-Sagana-Karatina-Marua road, construction of affordable housing units and development of markets and institutional facilities.

Speaking in Nyeri Town on Thursday, October 1, 2026, Kindiki said the Marua-Karatina road would be extended through Nyeri Town to Dedan Kimathi University, following requests from residents for the town to remain connected to the major transport corridor.

The announcement forms part of Kindiki’s wider development tour of Nyeri, where he has been inspecting ongoing infrastructure projects and engaging residents on government programmes.

Ruring’u Stadium upgrade takes shape

Kindiki said Nyeri would soon have a new Ruring’u Stadium, with the facility undergoing an upgrade that is about 70 per cent complete.

The project has been valued at Sh900 million and is being developed to modern standards, according to details shared during the Deputy President’s inspection of the facility.

He also said construction was ongoing on several roads within Nyeri Town, including the Kwa Pawa-Muruguru-KenGen road and Kangemi-Kagayu-Thunguma routes.

The Ngangarithi-Kandara-Gitathiini-Ciaraini road is also set to enter the construction phase, with Kindiki saying works would begin immediately.

Sh2.3bn Blue Valley housing project

The Deputy President highlighted the affordable housing programme at Blue Valley, where 361 houses are being constructed under Phase One at a cost of Sh877 million.

A second phase comprising 468 houses is also planned at a cost of Sh1.5 billion.

Kindiki said the housing projects were providing employment for young people while creating opportunities for businesses and traders involved in the construction and supply chains.

He further said affordable housing, markets and institutional housing projects worth about Sh17 billion were ongoing across the wider Nyeri County.

Among the projects he cited are 1,000-bed accommodation units for police recruits at Kiganjo Police Training College at a cost of Sh2.2 billion and 1,200-bed units at the Nyeri National Polytechnic valued at Sh588 million.

A Sh20 million tuition block is also being constructed at the Nyeri Campus of the Kenya Medical Training College.

Modern markets target more than 1,000 traders

Kindiki also highlighted the construction of the Nyeri Modern Market, which is being developed at a cost of Sh324 million.

The facility is expected to accommodate more than 750 traders, while an additional smaller market will provide space for about 300 traders, bringing the projected total to approximately 1,050 traders.

The market is among more than 13 market projects at different stages of development across Nyeri County.

Other projects include facilities in Tetu, Kieni, Nyeri Town, Mathira, Othaya and Mukurwe-ini.

Kindiki said the markets were intended to provide traders with modern facilities while supporting local commerce.

Nyeri records high Taifa Care registration

The Deputy President also pointed to healthcare coverage in the county, saying about 470,000 Nyeri residents had registered for Taifa Care.

He said the figure represented 78 per cent of the county’s population, placing Nyeri fifth nationally, while 33 million Kenyans, equivalent to about 70 per cent of the country’s population, had enrolled nationally.

Kindiki urged residents who had not registered to join the programme to improve access to healthcare.

Kindiki shifts focus to performance in political debate

During his engagement with residents, Kindiki also called for political leaders to focus on their records and delivery rather than insults, chants and political rhetoric.

He said voters should question leaders seeking political positions about what they had delivered during their time in office.

“Every leader who stands on a platform should talk about the work they have done. Every leader seeking a position has been in leadership, and every leader should present their record,” Kindiki said.

He further called for unity among communities in the Mount Kenya region, naming the Agikuyu, Aembu and Ameru.

“My work now is to continue working, to bring our people together and unite everyone,” Kindiki said.

Kindiki’s Nyeri tour comes as he continues to combine inspections of government projects with public engagements across the county, placing roads, housing, markets, sports facilities and other infrastructure at the centre of his message.
