Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has upgraded its hospital facilities through new investments in modern beds, specialised equipment and ward renovations, as it works to improve care for patients requiring specialised treatment.

The improvements were officially handed over on Thursday, October 29, 2026, during an event presided over by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale under the hospital’s Adopt-a-Ward Initiative.

The initiative brings together private sector organisations and development partners to support the improvement of healthcare facilities at the country’s largest referral hospital.

Among the contributions is KSh100 million from Co-operative Bank of Kenya, which funded the renovation and equipping of orthopaedic wards. The investment includes 96 modern orthopaedic beds.

The Nakumatt Molo Fire Victims Fund has also contributed KSh30 million towards the hospital’s improvement programme, including 40 three-crank electric beds.

Other support includes the Nest360 Newborn Unit project, while the hospital has also introduced 136 modern beds and 3D printing technology as part of efforts to strengthen its medical services.

Speaking during the handover, Duale said partnerships between the government and private sector were important in improving healthcare delivery and expanding access to specialised services.

He noted that the renovated wards would provide a better environment for patients receiving treatment and called on more companies, foundations and development partners to support similar projects.

The Cabinet Secretary also encouraged the hospital management and implementing agencies to ensure proper maintenance of the new structures. The CS noted the need for transparency, accountability and compliance with technical standards to enable the investments to benefit the patients in the coming days.

Government is also undertaking renovation of Levels 7 and 8 at KNH in pursuit of improving hospital infrastructure.

Apart from the development at the referral hospital, the Ministry of Health is developing Primary Care Networks in all the 47 counties to deliver health services close to the community.

Referral and emergency response system has been enhanced by the establishment of the National Ambulance Dispatch Centre and the SHA 922 Lifeline that are meant to provide access to medical services.

According to Duale, KNH is expected to continue building on its strengths in specialized health care services, research and training as well as adopt new technologies.

The event was attended by Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr Ouma Oluga, KNH Board Chairman Dr Abbas Gullet, KNH Chief Executive Officer Dr Richard Lesiyampe, Prime Bank Founder and Chairperson Dr Rasik Kantaria, Co-operative Bank Director of Corporate and Institutional Banking Lydia Rono, and Nest360 Country Lead Professor William Macharia, among other officials.
