World 1,500m bronze medalist Reynold Cheruiyot is set to open his 2026 track season at the Kip Keino Classic on April 24, at Nyayo National Stadium Nairobi. The 21 years old, made headlines when he clocked his personal best of 3:29:91 at Diamond Final in Zurich, finishing behind Niels Laros (3:29.20).
He is eager to make his 2026 track season at a high notch at Nyayo Stadium under the floodlights. “I will start my season here in Kenya at the Kip Keino Classic on April 24,” Cheruiyot said. “We are the hosts, so as local athletes we have to rise to the occasion and deliver in that race.”
The meet will also feature wave light technology for the first time in Kenya, with LED pacing lights along the inside rail designed to guide athletes through precise splits. He aims to win under 3:30 in his opener, at Kip Keino Classic, marking his first win under the pace of a floodlights race.
Cheruiyot previously recorded 5,000m race finishing fifth in 13:39.07, in 2021 and 1,500m in 3:35.50 in 2022, second after Abel Kipsang (3:31.01).
I’m looking forward to the Commonwealth Games and the World Ultimate Championships as I practices tactics race for the win, as I target to finish the 5,000m with hopes of winning a medal.
“There are the Commonwealth Games and also the World Ultimate Championships; those are our biggest focus with my coach. We are looking at sharpening our tactics,” he said. He hopes to win a medal in the Kip Keino race at Nyayo Stadium.
