At the Agri-Business Summit 2025, private sector and government leaders summoned a vibrant and sustainable agricultural sector in Kenya. PS Ministry of Trade, Industry and Investment Dr. Juma Mukhwana urged youths to see the opportunities availed by agribusiness and referred to it as a major source of investment and economic activity.

Among the key themes was the imperative for a transition from rain-based farming to irrigation-based farming.

With unpredictable rainfall brought on by climate change, panelists supported the government’s proposal to construct water pans in each of the counties so that farmers will be able to plant throughout the year and reduce the risk of droughts.

Competition was also high on the agenda. The Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) claimed a commitment to protect smallholder farmers and MSMEs. Director General David Kemei detailed current initiatives, including an investigation into the seeds market for anti-competitive practices.

He highlighted notable success stories, such as the recovery of KES 2.5 billion for small suppliers from the collapsed Tuskys Supermarket, and reforms such as the Retail Trade Code of Practice that encourage payment on time.

Innovation in farm inputs was also the center of attraction. Elgon Kenya showcased its customized Blended Fertilizers that are specifically produced for specific plants like coffee, maize, and potatoes.

Dr. Bimal Kantaria clarified that customization reduces wastage and increases productivity as it caters to the precise nutritional need of each plant.

The summit concluded in a thunderous note of concord: Kenya’s agricultural revolution is based on an energized combination of fair market access, climate-resilient irrigation, and accessible, innovative inputs.

With this partnership, the future of Kenyan agriculture can be more inclusive, resilient, and prosperous.
