The national under-20 women’s volleyball team extended their impressive run at the African Championships with a commanding straight-sets victory over Burundi on Friday evening in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
The Junior Malkia Strikers overwhelmed their East African rivals 25-8, 25-17, and 25-13, marking their fourth win in the round-robin tournament and edging closer to clinching the continental crown.
Kenya began their campaign on Monday with a routine 3-0 win over Senegal before suffering a 3-1 setback against hosts Cameroon on Tuesday.
However, the team bounced back strongly, sweeping Uganda 3-0 and then pulling off a major upset with a 3-1 triumph over tournament favourites Egypt (25-21, 31-33, 25-19, 25-21) on Thursday.
Coached by Jackline Barasa, the Junior Strikers are aiming to improve on last year’s performance in Tunisia, where they finished fourth. With just a few matches remaining, Kenya remains firmly in contention for the championship title.
