The government has assured Kenyans of its readiness to combat drought and other climate change-related challenges, saying adequate measures have been put in place to address food insecurity.

Speaking in Banissa Constituency, Mandera County, Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku said the government has procured sufficient food supplies to support all Kenyans affected by the ongoing drought.

“I want to assure Kenyans that the government has procured enough food to feed all persons who are food insecure as a result of the current drought situation,” Ruku said.

The CS affirmed that the government has adopted both short-term and long-term strategies aimed at addressing crop failures and preventing future food shortages caused by climate variability.

He cited the Galana-Kulalu irrigation project as a key example of the government’s commitment to sustainable solutions to drought-related challenges.

“The Galana-Kulalu irrigation project demonstrates the seriousness and readiness of President William Samoei Ruto’s administration in providing lasting solutions to drought afflictions,” Ruku said.

Ruku added that the government remains proactive in its approach, noting that continued investments in irrigation, food reserves, and climate resilience programmes are critical in cushioning vulnerable communities against the effects of climate change.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring food security and protecting livelihoods in arid and semi-arid regions most affected by recurring droughts.
