Kenya Railways Corporation has ushered in 2026 on a high note with the reopening of the long-awaited Uplands–Kijabe–Longonot railway corridor, a move set to significantly ease congestion along one of the country’s busiest transport routes.

After months of intensive rehabilitation works following damage caused by heavy rains in 2024, the strategic Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) section has now been certified fit for operations after successful test runs.

The reopening marks a major milestone for the State corporation as it restores a critical freight artery linking Nairobi to Western Kenya and the wider region.

The revived route is expected to decongest the heavily burdened Nairobi–Naivasha–Nakuru road corridor, which has for years borne the brunt of cargo transport following disruptions to rail services.

By shifting large volumes of freight back to rail, Kenya Railways aims to reduce traffic snarl-ups, road damage caused by heavy trucks, and transport costs for businesses.

“This is a strong start to the year for us,” the reopening signals, positioning Kenya Railways as a key driver of efficient and sustainable transport in 2026,” Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga said.

The corridor will play a vital role in moving cargo from the Port of Mombasa to inland destinations, while also supporting regional trade with Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Beyond easing congestion, the resumption of freight services is expected to bring economic relief to communities along the line, create jobs, and improve turnaround times for goods.

It also complements ongoing efforts to integrate the MGR with the Standard Gauge Railway, strengthening Kenya’s position as a regional logistics hub.

As Kenya Railways opens this new chapter, the Uplands–Kijabe–Longonot route stands as a clear statement of intent: 2026 is the year of recovery, efficiency, and momentum, with rail transport reclaiming its place at the heart of the country’s freight movement.
