Kenya Railways has announced free commuter train tickets for members of the public as part of this year’s Customer Service Week celebrations.
The corporation said it had partnered with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to offer the free rides during the week-long celebrations.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 6, Kenya Railways urged members of the public interested in the offer to follow its official social media pages for information on the routes, dates and how to access the tickets.
“Kenya Railways has partnered with the KRA to offer free commuter train tickets to members of the public as part of this year’s customer service week celebrations,” the corporation said.
Customer Service Week began on October 5 and is scheduled to run until October 9, 2026.
Kenya Railways operates commuter services across several routes, with fares varying depending on the destination.
For the Nairobi-Nanyuki Safari Train, passengers travelling within the Nairobi zone pay KSh150. The destinations include Makadara, Dandora, Mwiki, Githurai, Kahawa, Ruiru and Kalimoni.
Those travelling beyond the Nairobi zone pay KSh150 to Thika, KSh160 to Mitubiri, KSh180 to Makuyu, KSh200 to Maragua and KSh250 to Murang’a in economy class.
The fare rises to KSh260 for Sagana, KSh300 for Karatina, KSh350 for Kiganjo, KSh360 for Chaka and Naro Moru, and KSh400 for Nanyuki.
The free-ticket offer would therefore give commuters using the affected services a temporary relief from the usual fares during the Customer Service Week celebrations.
The announcement comes as Kenya Railways continues with plans to improve its commuter rail network.
Among the projects is a railway connection to Talanta Sports City Stadium ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The project includes upgrading 13 kilometres of the existing railway line between Nairobi Central Station and Satellite, as well as constructing a 1.3-kilometre second track between Kibera and Satellite.
Kenya Railways is also putting up new stations at Talanta Stadium and Laini Saba.
Pedestrian overpasses and underpasses are also being constructed at Kibera, Laini Saba, Gatwekera and Kambi Muru to improve access and safety for passengers.
