Kevin Kang'ethe wanted in USA for killing his girlfriend

The government through the Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga has extradited Kevin Kang’ethe to the United States of America (USA).

Kang’ethe, accused of murdering his girlfriend Margaret Mbitu in the USA and then disposing of her body, left Nairobi for the USA on Sunday, September 1.

He is set to face a murder charge at Suffolk Superior Court in Pemberton Square, Boston, on September 3, 2024.

Kang’ethe flew to Kenya in 2023 after allegedly killing Mbitu and was on the run until he was apprehended by Kenyan authorities.

Notably, the 40-year-old first escaped from Muthaiga Police Station after his arrest. He would then be re-arrested and held at the Industrial Area Remand and Allocation Centre.

Kang’ethe was later arraigned before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina who subsequently ruled that he be extradited.

"I wish to reiterate my commitment and support whenever needed to the United States of America and in particular the prosecution team as they proceed with the next phase of the case. To the family of the Late Margaret Mbitu, we offer our support and prayers," DPP Ingonga said.

The extradition comes after Ingonga assured Federal Bureau Investigations (FBI) Director Christopher Wray during talks in Nairobi in June 2024 that his office was keen to ensure justice involving this case is done in an expeditious manner.

"The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) remains committed in executing its constitutional mandate in accordance with the rule of law and further, with due regard to public interest, the administration of justice, and prevention of abuse of the legal process," Ingonga added.
