Kenya Exports Shift to Value-Added Products to Boost Global Competitiveness

Kenya export is moving beyond raw commodities to marketing value-added and branded products that command premium prices internationally.

This transformation not only boost foreign exchange but also create jobs, stimulate industrial growth and position Kenya as a competitive global sourcing destination.

Speaking during a forum hosted by the Marketing Society of Kenya (MSK), the Principal Secretary of Trade, Regina Ombam said that as global trade continues to evolve, Kenya must reposition itself as a preferred global sourcing destination by embracing strategic marketing, innovation and value addition.

She noted that tea and coffee remain iconic staples; the future lies in processing, packing and branding them as premium products that reflect Kenya’s identity and innovation. Ombam emphasized that strong brands are key to resilience in an era of shifting supply chains, technological disruption and geopolitical uncertainty.

The forum, themed “Marketing as a Catalyst for Trade Competitiveness and Sustainable Development” was attended by MSK Chair Zuhura Odhiambo, board members of MSK, marketers, business community and government officials.

They agreed that Kenya’s competitiveness will depend on its ability to go beyond commodity dependence and embrace innovation- driven exports. The country hopes to strengthen its industrial base as by building recognizable brands and investing in value addition, which will attract investment and secure a stronger position in global market.
