Kenya Airways (KQ) has announced its official return as the sponsor of Kenya’s national rugby team, the Simbas 15s, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s continued investment in local sports and talent development.
The new partnership, unveiled during a signing ceremony held at the RFUEA Grounds on Ngong Road, will see Kenya Airways become the official airline partner of the Simbas as they gear up for the Rugby World Cup qualifiers later this year.
The deal, valued at KES 15 million in-kind sponsorship, is set to run for the next 12 months.Speaking during the event, Kenya Airways’ Chief Customer and Commercial Officer, Julius Thairu, expressed the airline’s pride in supporting the team’s journey, emphasizing the alignment between the spirit of rugby and the airline’s brand identity.“This collaboration is rooted in shared values of teamwork, tenacity, and transformation—the spirit that defines rugby and our journey as the Pride of Africa,” said Thairu. “This demonstrates our dedication to uplifting local talent and empowering African champions to rise.”The announcement came just ahead of a crucial warm-up match between the Simbas and the UAE national team, a key fixture as Kenya eyes qualification for the global tournament.
Kenya Rugby Union Chairman, Sasha Mutai, hailed the return of Kenya Airways as a timely boost for the national team.“We are excited to have Kenya Airways as the main sponsor of the Kenya 15s national rugby team, the Simbas,” said Mutai. “Their support will not only go a long way in helping make the Kenya Simbas a rugby power globally, but also contribute to our shared mission of raising the Kenya flag high.”
Kenya Airways’ involvement in this partnership continues its legacy of backing Kenyan sports. Through strategic sponsorships and initiatives, the airline has positioned itself as a key player in nurturing homegrown talent and enhancing the country’s global sports profile.
As the Simbas embark on their journey towards World Cup qualification, this partnership serves as a rallying point for both players and fans, reaffirming the airline’s role not just as a carrier, but as a committed champion of national pride and sporting excellence.
