Kenya Advances Digital Inclusion With New AI Initiative For Persons With Disabilities

Kenya has unveiled an initiative aimed at advancing inclusivity through technology: the AI for Disability Project. Launched on May 4, 2026 the program seeks to harness artificial intelligence to empower Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), ensuring they are not left behind in technology and the country’s digital transformation.

The Connected Africa Summit that was concluded on Thursday, April 30, 2026, with the launch held today for the AI for Disability Project, an initiative set to improve the lives of PWDs.

The Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy (MoICDE), partnership with Huawei brought together a broad coalition partners including   the State Department for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE), Qhala, Assistive Technologies for Disability Trust (AT4D) and inABLE. This aims to ensure coordinated efforts in developing and deploying artificial intelligence solutions that address the needs of PWDs.

A manufacturing plant has been set up at KISE that will serve for local production and distribution of necessary equipment, capping the cost of importation and external manufacturing. Officials emphasized that the initiative is part of Kenya’s broader digital economy strategy, which will position technology as a social equity.

The initiative will provide assistive technologies, real-time transition services, adaptive learning platforms and accessible digital content that will diverse the needs. Huawei and its partners said they will support young innovators in refining and scaling their ideas into viable, real-world solutions that can deliver meaningful social impact.
