Global condom maker Karex, the Malaysian manufacturer behind the brands such as Durex and Trojan, has sent a warning about a looming price hike as geopolitical tensions rise disrupting supply chains.

The company has revealed the closure of Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route, could affect their shipping urging an increase in price up to 30%.

Karex’s chief executive Goh Miah, told the media outlets that the production costs have risen since the start of the conflict.

Karex’s supplies billions of condoms annually to the international markets, meaning higher transportation costs, delay in raw materials and the mounting pressure on production schedules would be affected.

In a statement, Karex emphasized that the company remains committed to meeting global demands, disruptions in logistic and rising costs cannot be ignored.

“We are facing unprecedented challenges in ensuring timely delivery of our products. Adjustments in pricing are necessary to sustain operations,” the company said.

The announcement has raised concern among consumers and public health advocates. Condoms remain one of the most reliable forms of contraception and protection against Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

The significant price increase could affect affordability, especially in developing markets, reducing access and having a long term consequences for sexual health programs worldwide.
