Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has welcomed the decision by the courts to grant bail to over 40 young protesters charged with terrorism-related offences, terming it a “victory for justice and constitutionalism.”
In a statement released Thursday, Kalonzo praised the judiciary for granting bail to Peter Kinyanjui Wawanjiru, Serah Wanjiku Thiga, and others, describing them as “brave Gen Zs” who had faced what he termed “outrageous terrorism charges” for exercising their right to protest.
The former Vice President also referenced last week’s release of Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, Inooro TV journalist James Mboochi, and boda boda rider Stanley Mbuthia—who had similarly been charged under what he termed “punitive” bail terms in the same case.
“What is most disturbing,” Kalonzo said, “is the weaponisation of our judiciary and the abuse of anti-terror laws to punish protest, dissent, and even mourning.”
He cited the case of eight young men charged with terrorism offences after escorting the body of slain protester Albert Ojwang to Homa Bay. “Even the most ardent apologists of this dictatorship are at a loss for words,” he remarked.
Despite his criticism of the state, Kalonzo lauded the legal teams and political leaders who have been at the forefront of defending the accused.
“I take this moment to express my deep gratitude to the tireless legal team and leaders who have walked this journey—including Ndegwa Njiru, Hon. Eugene Wamalwa, Hon. Njeri Maina, and many others, from young lawyers to senior advocates. Your fierce advocacy must be applauded,” he said.
