Africa Kabaddi Confederation Secretary General Mathew Mwangi has confirmed that preparations are complete for the fourth edition of the Africa Kabaddi Senior Championships, scheduled to take place in Tunisia from July 26 to 31.
Mwangi, who also serves as the Chairperson of the Kenya Kabaddi Sports Federation, revealed that the decision was finalized following a meeting between World Kabaddi President Dr. Osama Said and Tunisia’s Deputy Minister of Sports.
The meeting cemented Tunisia’s role as host of the continental event, which will feature both men’s and women’s competitions.
“This will mark the fourth edition of the Africa Kabaddi Championships, and we’re proud to participate as Kenya,” said Mwangi. “More importantly, from a continental perspective, we’re witnessing steady growth of the sport, especially among school-going children, which is very encouraging.”
Dr. Osama Said also confirmed that all officials, including referees, coaches, and administrators, are fully certified and prepared for the championships.
Their readiness follows a training course held from April 24 to 29 this year, ensuring that the tournament will run smoothly.
Kenya hosted the inaugural edition in 2018, claiming victory in both the men’s and women’s categories.
After a two-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tanzania hosted the second edition in 2021. Kenya retained the men’s title while Egypt triumphed in the women’s category.
In 2023, the third edition took place in Cairo, where Egypt dominated on home soil, securing top honours in both divisions.
So far, seven countries have confirmed their participation in the upcoming championship.
Host nation Tunisia will represent North Africa alongside Algeria and Egypt. Cameroon will fly the flag for West Africa, while Kenya, Tanzania, and Burundi will represent East Africa with strong squads.
