There was a heartwarming celebration at Tambaya PCEA Church in Mukurweini on Sunday as 95-year-old Ibrahim Mbogo and 90-year-old Tabitha Wangui Mbogo exchanged vows, 64 years after their first meeting and falling in love.

The couple chose a white wedding to symbolize their enduring love and commitment. Although they were married under Kikuyu customary law when they first met in the 1960s, they decided to have a Christian wedding in a church to honor their faith.

“We met and fell in love in 1960,” Mbogo shared during an interview outside the church. “We deliberated and decided that a white wedding would be wonderful. Although we are legally married according to our Kikuyu customs, we wanted to celebrate our union as Christians.”

Wangui revealed that the key to a long and happy marriage lies in mutual respect and the willingness to apologize for mistakes. “Women, you must respect your husbands,” she advised. “If you do, you will have a marriage like ours. Always apologize and seek forgiveness when you make mistakes.”

Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia, a guest at the wedding, praised the couple and encouraged residents to follow their example. “There is no greater gift than the gift of family,” the MP said. “A strong family unit is the foundation of a thriving nation. I hope we can all learn from this couple’s example and appreciate the beauty of growing old together.”
