Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Ali Joho has joined senior Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders in Garissa County in reaffirming the party’s founding principles of unity, justice, inclusion and service to the people amid efforts to preserve its identity and political legacy following the death of former party leader Raila Odinga.

The gathering brought together ODM delegates and senior party officials, who reiterated their commitment to the ideals associated with Raila, popularly known as Baba, and called for continued unity as the party navigates its future.

In a statement following the meeting, Joho said the delegates had assembled to reaffirm the principles upon which Raila built the political movement, emphasising the need to maintain the party’s commitment to serving Kenyans.

Joho was accompanied by ODM Deputy Party Leader and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, party chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, organising secretary and Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, and host Governor Nathif Jama.

Other senior officials present included Secretary General Catherine Omanyo, senators and Members of Parliament led by Minority Leader and Director of Elections Junet Mohamed, as well as the party’s Woman Representative candidate, Umulkheir Harun.

The meeting provided a platform for party leaders and delegates to restate their commitment to ODM’s founding principles, with unity and inclusion featuring prominently in their message.

One of the notable aspects of the gathering was the presence of Raila Odinga Junior, whose attendance Joho described as a reminder that ODM remains a political home for those who believe in the party’s founding vision.

Raila Odinga Junior’s participation came as party leaders emphasised the importance of preserving the movement’s identity and continuing the political journey associated with its founding leadership.

Joho said the party was determined to honour Raila’s legacy through deliberate action rather than statements alone, urging members to remain committed to the principles that have guided the organisation.

“Of particular significance was the presence of Raila Odinga Junior whose attendance served as a powerful reminder that ODM remains a home to all who believe in its founding vision,” Joho said.

The remarks placed renewed attention on the question of how ODM will sustain its unity and political direction while maintaining the ideals that have shaped its history.

Joho said the delegates had made a collective declaration to uphold the principles associated with Raila and ensure they continue guiding the party’s future engagements.

He emphasised that members must remain united through political challenges and work together in the interests of the party and the wider Kenyan public.

“As a Party, we are resolved to honour Baba’s legacy not merely in words but through deliberate action,” he stated.

He added that ODM members needed to stand together and see the party’s journey through to the end, citing the trust placed in the movement by its supporters.
