Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has disowned a degree certificate linked to Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, saying he was never a student at the institution.
In a letter dated September 14, 2026, JKUAT Registrar of Academic Affairs Dr Aggrey Wanyama told the Consumers Federation of Kenya (COFEK) that Barasa’s name does not appear in the university’s student or alumni records.
The university also said it did not hold a graduation ceremony in May 2008, the period associated with the certificate.
JKUAT consequently described the Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering certificate bearing Barasa’s name as “NOT GENUINE.”
“His name doesn’t appear on our alumni records, and JKUAT did not have a graduation in May 2008. His certificate for Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Programme is therefore ‘NOT GENUINE,’” Wanyama said.
The university said the matter had previously been investigated by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), to which it had communicated its findings.
The latest development creates a contradiction with Barasa’s profile on the official Parliament of Kenya website, which lists him as having studied at JKUAT between 2001 and 2005 and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
The university’s latest response was issued after COFEK sought clarification on the lawmaker’s academic credentials.
JKUAT said it had forwarded the matter to EACC and EBK for consideration and any necessary action.
The development comes as questions continue to emerge over Barasa’s academic credentials, making the university’s latest statement a fresh point of focus for the two agencies that had previously received information on the matter.
