The Senate County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC) has ordered Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to bring Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja before the committee on Monday, March 30.
The CPAC Chair, Senator Moses Kajwang, said that if Sakaja misses the meeting, they will recommend to the House that Sakaja is not fit to hold public office. The recommendation will then be referred to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
“We are asking the IG to produce Governor Sakaja on Monday. The distance between the IG’s office and City Hall is not far. Therefore, no excuse will be accepted. If he misses the meeting, we can recommend to the House that he is in gross violation of the Constitution and not fit to hold public office,” said Senator Kajwang.
The Senate committee also fined Sakaja KSh 500,000 for failure to attend the summons. This is the highest amount that the court can give as a fine. Sakaja was supposed to answer questions regarding the audit of the 2024/2025 financial year. The governor has at least seven advisors, who earn on average KSh 203,000.
The committee stated that due to Sakaja’s repeated failure to attend the meetings, they will use the report as is, citing Nairobi County for irregularities and abuse of public resources.
Sakaja has missed several CPAC meetings, sometimes asking for a new date. Boycotted summons by the Senate are not new for county governors.
Apart from Sakaja, the committee has summoned 29 governors, warning them that failure to attend will lead to a charge of contempt of Parliament.
