The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has reminded voters requiring assistance during elections that they are legally entitled to receive help from a person of their own choice.

In a public advisory issued on Wednesday, the electoral agency said the provision applies to voters living with disabilities, those who are unable to read or write, and individuals facing other lawful challenges that may hinder them from voting independently.

“The Commission reminds the public that voters who require assistance due to disability, illiteracy, or other lawful reasons are entitled to be assisted by a person of their own choice,”the statement read.

However, the Commission emphasized that only one assistant is permitted for each voter and that no individual is allowed to assist more than one voter during the election exercise.

IEBC further noted that all instances of assisted voting must be officially recorded, with the person providing assistance being appropriately marked to indicate that they have already assisted a voter, in line with electoral laws and regulations.

The electoral body said the measures are intended to safeguard the integrity, transparency and secrecy of the voting process while ensuring that all eligible voters are able to exercise their democratic rights.

The Commission also urged members of the public to rely on official communication channels for accurate, timely and verified election information in order to curb misinformation and speculation during the electoral period.
