Police in Eldoret have arrested a General Service Unit (GSU) officer allegedly attached to the security detail of a Rift Valley governor in connection with the shooting of a 45-year-old nurse.
The officer was arrested after a six-hour search following the death of Dorris Murei, popularly known as Dori, who was shot inside a bar near Eldoret State Lodge on Sunday evening.
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani said preliminary investigations showed that the suspect entered the entertainment spot with a concealed firearm before walking towards Murei and opening fire.
“He went straight to the girl whose name is Dorris Murei, who is popularly known here as Dori, and began shooting her. He shot her five times,” Sicharani said while addressing journalists on Monday.
Murei was shot several times and died at the scene, leaving her family and residents demanding answers over what led to the incident.
The arrest of the officer has also drawn attention because of his alleged connection to the security team of a senior Rift Valley governor.
Husband Speaks After Nurse’s Death
Murei’s husband said he had spoken to her only hours before she was killed and that she appeared to be in good spirits.
The couple had been making plans for their child, who was preparing to report to Maseno University.
“I spoke with her yesterday at 1 am when we were organising for our child who was reporting to Maseno University, and she was in a very jovial mood,” he said.
He later received a phone call from an unknown person informing him that his wife had been shot.
The husband said he went to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, where he confirmed that the deceased was his wife.
“I went to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, where I confirmed that she was the one,” he said.
Relatives who arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting said they found Murei lying in a pool of blood before her body was taken away.
Family Calls for Investigation
The killing has caused anger among Murei’s relatives, who want the police to establish what happened and ensure that those responsible face the law.
The family has also rejected reports that the killing was linked to a suspected love triangle.
Relatives have raised concerns that the investigation could be compromised because of the alleged position of the arrested officer.
Police are expected to continue with investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the shooting and the events that preceded it.
The suspect is expected to face the legal process as investigators piece together the circumstances surrounding Murei’s death.
