Learners unhappy with their Grade 10 Senior School placements will get another opportunity to revise their choices starting next week, the Ministry of Education has announced.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said the second review window will run from Tuesday, January 6, to Friday, January 9, giving students whose earlier applications were unsuccessful a fresh chance to seek placement in alternative schools.

The announcement follows the conclusion of the first review exercise, whose results were released on Monday, December 29. During that initial phase, the ministry received 355,457 applications, out of which 211,636 were approved. The remaining requests were declined largely due to limited school capacity or the absence of preferred subject combinations in the selected institutions.

“Learners were allowed to apply for a review of their initial placement from December 23, 2025. The processing was concluded on December 29, and the results are now available on the placement portal,” Ogamba said in a statement on Tuesday, December 30.

He noted that demand for a few top national schools far exceeded available spaces, citing Alliance High School, Kenya High School and Mang’u High School, which each received up to 20,000 applications despite having an average capacity of about 500 slots.

According to the ministry, 88 per cent of learners have so far been placed in line with either their original or revised choices. Students whose review applications were successful can now download their joining instructions through the ministry’s placement portals.

All Grade 10 learners are expected to report to their respective senior schools starting January 12.

The placement process follows the release of the 2025 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) results on December 11, and the subsequent announcement of Grade 10 placements on December 19. A total of 1,130,459 learners sat the examination, including 578,630 boys and 551,829 girls.

President William Ruto has previously assured parents and learners that the government has put in place adequate resources to support a smooth transition to senior school. On December 20, the President said more than KSh44 billion in capitation funds had been released and would reach schools before reporting begins.

Ruto also cautioned politicians against politicising the placement process, reiterating the government’s commitment to ensuring that all eligible learners transition seamlessly into Grade 10.
