The government is planning a major recruitment drive that will see thousands of Kenyans employed as police officers and teachers in the near future.
In the 2026/27 Budget Policy Statement prepared by the National Treasury and presented to Parliament, it is proposed that 20,000 police officers will be employed starting this year. The move is aimed at improving security across the country, with more attention being given to the upcoming 2027 General Elections.
In addition to that, the government also proposes to provide more funds to equip the police force with the latest technology and other needs under the National Police Service. The move is also aimed at improving the security of the country.
In the past, the government has been recruiting police officers from 2022 to 2025, which has seen the police-to-citizen ratio reduce from 1:1,150 to 1:800. The move is expected to improve the services offered to the public.
The budget for the security sector is also proposed to increase from KSh329.9 billion to KSh344.9 billion between 2028 and 2029.
The government also proposes to recruit 30,000 teachers by 2029 to address the shortage of teachers and improve the standards of education.
The recruitment will be done by the Teachers Service Commission with more focus being given to science and technical subjects.
In addition to that, the government also proposes to construct 20,000 classrooms and renovate 15,000 more to help students transition to the Competency-Based Education system, especially those moving to senior secondary schools after Grade 9.
The move is also expected to provide thousands of jobs for the youth and improve the services offered to the public that most Kenyans rely on daily.
