The government is in talks with Amsons Group of Companies to build 10 mother-and-baby hospitals across nine counties in a move aimed at improving care for mothers and newborns.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale held a meeting with the company’s delegation led by Assistant Managing Director Ahmed Abdallah to discuss the proposed partnership.
The plan is part of a USD 40 million project titled “A Promise to Life,” which will assist the nation to achieve universal health coverage by increasing access to maternal and newborn services in hard-to-reach areas.
According to the Ministry of Health, the project will be phased over time with the first phase being implemented using three hospitals and will eventually expand to a total of ten hospitals by the year 2028.
Upon completion, each hospital will cater to at least 300 people per day, thus reducing the burden placed on other hospitals and facilitating access to specialized care.
The Director-General further noted that the project has come at a time when the nation is experiencing difficulties with maternal and newborn health, hence there is need to make additional efforts in addressing the challenge.
This according to Duale will go along way in bridging access gaps as well as reforming the health sector through the current health sector reforms.
Also present at the event included PS for Medical Services Ouma Oluga, the Director of Nursing and Curative Services Dr Andrew Toro, among other officials from the Ministry.
Other people who were present at the event include senior members of Amsons.
