Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has welcomed the inauguration of the Rusinga Island Ring Road, describing it as a major milestone in unlocking the region’s economic potential.

In a statement shared on Sunday, Wanga confirmed that the 19-kilometre road was officially commissioned by President William Ruto, marking a significant step in improving infrastructure within the county.

She noted that Rusinga Island, widely regarded as a cradle of mankind and the birthplace of Tom Mboya, holds immense tourism potential that has remained largely untapped due to limited accessibility.

According to the governor, the new road is expected to transform connectivity to the island, making it easier for residents and visitors to move around while also enhancing economic activities.

Wanga highlighted that the improved infrastructure will support local fishermen by easing the transportation of fish from landing sites, thereby boosting trade. She added that the road is also likely to attract new investments in tourism and hospitality, positioning the island as a key destination within the region.

The project forms part of ongoing efforts by the national and county governments to improve infrastructure and stimulate economic growth across counties.
