Senior government officials and county leaders have held fresh talks on how to improve the management and operation of the Nairobi Metropolitan bulk water supply systems.

The meeting, convened by the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation at Maji House in Nairobi, brought together water executives from counties served by the bulk systems, including Nairobi, Kiambu and Machakos.

It was chaired by Water Cabinet Secretary Eng. Eric Mugaa and attended by Principal Secretary for Water and Sanitation Julius Korir, Water Secretary Eng. Samuel Alima, regulators, development agencies and representatives from the Council of Governors and Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company.

Speaking during the meeting, CS Mugaa said stronger cooperation between the national government, counties and inter-county agencies was necessary to ensure smooth water supply for millions of residents.

He noted that most of the bulk water projects cross county boundaries and can only work well if all parties share responsibility and communicate effectively.

The Cabinet Secretary also emphasized the need for counties and agencies to honour loan repayment agreements tied to major water projects, saying this would protect public funds and attract more investment into the sector.

PS Julius Korir said the government remains committed to providing a reliable and sustainable bulk water supply, adding that the new operational framework is designed to secure long-term water availability for the metropolitan region.
