On Sunday, police officers reportedly used tear gas on worshippers at Witima Anglican Church, causing a number of members of the congregation to suffer serious injuries. Members of the GEMA community led by the Watho coalition strongly condemned the attack.

The leaders have leveled criticism at the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for their silence on the issue. They have described the failure to act as a violation of the freedom of worship.

They have given a three week ultimatum to the authorities for them to come out against the accused officers, warning that if no action is taken, the matter will be raised to higher level investigative units and the International Criminal Court for justice to be served.
