Despite impeached Deputy President Gachagua’s dramatic announcement of his exit from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) earlier today, party officials have dismissed his move as political theatrics.
According to UDA, Gachagua’s resignation is “null and void,”
UDA stated that membership matters are solely handled by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP)—where Gachagua ought to have officially submitted his resignation as the Deputy Party Leader.
The ruling party, UDA, maintains that it “Officially removed one, Rigathi Gachagua, as its Deputy Party Leader, which automatically revoked his membership,”
In a letter addressed to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) on 16 January 2025, the ruling party confirmed the leadership changes which were subsequently acknowledged by the ORPP.
“Upon review of the submitted documents, this Office confirms that the process of appointment of H.E Kithure Kindiki as the Deputy Party Leader was conducted in line with the party constitution,” read the ORPP response on 22 January 2025.The party maintains that the leadership restructuring is final and procedurally sound. Gachagua’s political future within the UDA now appears sealed.
