Gachagua Urges Mt. Kenya Leaders to Focus on Development, Not Politics

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called on leaders from the Mt. Kenya region to shift focus from divisive politics and concentrate on delivering on their development promises.

Speaking at Our Lady of Sorrows Baricho Catholic Parish in Kirinyaga County during the Parish’s Centenary Celebrations on Sunday, Gachagua urged leaders to prioritize their duties over political rivalries.

“The elections ended, and the next election cycle is in 2027. Elected leaders should focus on serving the people, while aspirants will have their opportunity when the time comes,” said Gachagua.

He warned against the rise of “high-octane politics” in Mt. Kenya, emphasizing that other regions in the country are calm and focused on development. “Let us reduce unnecessary political tensions and focus on the development agenda that will benefit the people,” he added.

The Deputy President also encouraged leaders to work together for the greater good of the country, despite their political differences.

He reminded them to appreciate and support those who have been loyal, reflecting on the importance of kindness and collaboration in leadership.

Gachagua also reiterated the government’s commitment to working with the Catholic Church in the nation’s socio-economic transformation.

“The Catholic Church has been a reliable partner in development, especially through its efforts in education, healthcare, and social services. We will continue working together for the well-being of our communities,” he said.

The event, held at Baricho Primary School grounds, saw hundreds of faithful celebrate 100 years of evangelization by the Baricho Catholic Parish, which was established in 1923.

Over the decades, the Parish has contributed to the establishment of schools, hospitals, and initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of the community.

Prominent leaders attending the celebration included Governor Anne Waiguru, Deputy Governor David Githanda, Secretary to the Cabinet Mercy Wanjau, Senator Kamau Murango, Ndia MP George Kariuki, and Woman Representative Jane Njeri.

In his remarks, Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa praised Gachagua for his efforts to unite the region and combat social ills such as drug abuse.

However, Thang’wa also downplayed recent political endorsements of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as the Mt. Kenya region’s key link to the government, stating that Parliament remains the constitutional link between the people and the Executive.

“The National Assembly plays this role, and MPs should fulfill their duties without abdicating them,” he said.

Kirinyaga Senator Kamau Murango echoed these sentiments, calling on leaders to cease political squabbles and support the Deputy President.

“We must respect the Presidency, which includes both President William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua,” Murango stated.
