Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed he has information identifying three police officers he alleges are linked to the killing of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.
Gachagua challenged DCI Director Mohamed Amin to name the officers, whom he said are attached to Kikuyu Police Station and Karinde Police Post.
The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader made the claims as he responded to a planned DCI press conference on the investigation into Mutiso’s killing.
“I have the names of the three police killers from Murkomen’s community whom you have been instructed to cover up,” Gachagua said.
He claimed his sources had given him details of the officers and warned that he would release the information if the DCI attempted to cover up the case.
“We shall release the details after your presser if you attempt a cover up,” he said.
Gachagua specifically challenged the DCI to name “the inspector from Kikuyu Police Station, the constable from the same police station and the other constable from Karinde Police Post.”
He did not name the officers in the statement or provide evidence publicly linking them to Mutiso’s killing.
Gachagua also claimed that some police officers had given him information about the case and accused the DCI of shielding officers involved in killings.
“Good officers have given me all the details and your days of covering up killings by police officers must come to an end,” he said.
The former Deputy President further challenged Amin to allow officers from what he described as the Nairobi Sierra killer squad to attend the press conference.
He claimed the officers had been transferred out of Nairobi and wanted them given an opportunity to explain who allegedly instructed them and why they were now being victimised.
“Allow the Nairobi Sierra killer squad you have transferred out of Nairobi to attend the presser. They want to tell Kenyans and name the persons who have been instructing them and how they are now being victimized,” Gachagua said.
The claims come as detectives intensify investigations into the killing of Mutiso, a mental health researcher who was shot dead during her morning commute in Nairobi last week.
DCI detectives have been pursuing several leads, including a Toyota Prado that allegedly blocked the taxi she was travelling in before gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire.
Investigators have also been examining whether the killing was a targeted attack. Reports indicate that Mutiso had previously reported threats to her life to police, adding another line of inquiry to the investigation.
Gachagua’s latest allegations now put the DCI under fresh pressure to explain the progress of the investigation and address claims that police officers could be involved.
The DCI has not publicly confirmed Gachagua’s allegation that the three officers he referred to are connected to Mutiso’s killing.
The identities of the alleged officers therefore remain unverified, with the investigation still ongoing.
