Former Matungu MP David Were is mourning the death of his son after he was reportedly attacked and killed by suspected robbers in Kisumu.

Hannington Were, 39, succumbed to stab wounds after he and a friend were attacked by two men riding on a motorcycle in the Obunga area on Saturday night.

According to the family, Hannington had stepped out with a friend to buy food when they were ambushed near Makini School along Nyerere Road.

“They decided to walk because there were no boda boda along the way. However, when they reached Makini School, they were attacked by boda boda riders,” former MP David Were said.

The former legislator said his son was stabbed twice in the back and also hit on the head with a metal rod during the attack. He was rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

His friend survived the attack and is currently fighting for his life in hospital with serious injuries.

Hannington worked as a compliance officer at the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), according to his father, who described him as a quiet and private person with no known disputes.

The killing has now sparked fresh security concerns in Kisumu, especially over rising attacks involving criminals using motorcycles at night. Residents in parts of the lakeside city have increasingly complained about muggings, robberies and violent assaults targeting pedestrians and motorists.

David Were has called on police to intensify patrols and track down the killers.

The incident also happened just hours after another violent robbery was reported in the Obunga area where a night guard was seriously injured after robbers stormed a fish supplies shop and stole electronics and cash.

Police say investigations into Hannington’s killing are ongoing.
