A fire broke out at Hill School in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu county, early Tuesday morning, September 22, prompting a multi-agency emergency response.

The blaze started at around 5am and affected a dormitory occupied by approximately 340 Form Three and Form Four students. No injuries were reported after the students had already left the dormitory for morning preparation when the fire broke out, allowing them to escape the affected building safely.

What did Kenya Red Cross say about Hill School Eldoret fire?

The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) confirmed that its response teams were deployed to the school following the incident. The organisation worked alongside the Uasin Gishu County Coordinator, police officers, firefighters and members of the local community to contain the situation.

“This morning, KRCS responded to a fire incident at Hill School, Eldoret, which broke out at around 5am and affected a dormitory housing some 340 Form 3 and 4 students,” the organisation said.

By the time KRCS issued its statement, the fire had been brought under control, with response teams remaining at the school to support those affected. The Kenya Red Cross also began offering psychosocial support to students following the incident as it assessed the impact of the fire.

A rapid assessment was launched to establish the extent of the damage and determine the assistance required in the aftermath of the incident. The students’ absence from the dormitory because of the morning preparation routine is believed to have helped avert casualties despite the intensity of the fire.

Hill School Eldoret is a national school in Uasin Gishu county, and the incident could affect normal learning activities as authorities assess the condition of the damaged dormitory and determine the next steps.
