Several petrol stations across the country have been fined or shut down after they were found selling poor-quality or illegal fuel.

In a notice released on Tuesday, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) said the action followed inspections carried out between January and March this year.

During the inspection, Epra tested fuel samples from 758 stations, with the total number of tests carried out standing at 2,713.

The majority of the stations were found to have passed the test, while five stations were found to have major issues.

“During the period January to March 2026, a total of 2,713 tests were conducted at 758 petroleum sites. From the tests, 753 of the sites were found to be compliant. However, tests from five sites turned out to be non-compliant,” EPRA said.

These included petrol mixed with kerosene, fuel with high sulphur content, and cases of fuel meant for export being sold locally.

In Elgeyo Marakwet, a petrol station in Kapkayo was fined more than KSh100,000 after tests showed that they were selling petrol and diesel of low standards.

In Wajir, EPRA officers seized fuel from an illegal site in Habaswein. The case is now in court.

Another operation in Kwale led to the closure of an illegal fuel depot after diesel meant for export was found being sold within the country.

In Kisumu, a service station was fined more than KSh435,000 for selling kerosene meant for export. The station has since reopened after meeting the required standards.

In another operation, a petrol station in Murungaru, Nyandarua County, was closed as it sold adulterated diesel.

Epra says the operations will continue as the agency seeks to ensure that the fuel sold to the people of Kenya meets the required standards.

The authority has also asked the public to report any suspicious fuel activities, including cases where fuel may be mixed or sold illegally, through its hotline, USSD code (*363#) or SMS service.
