Residents of Bomet and the wider South Rift region are set to benefit from improved access to specialised maternal and child healthcare following the commissioning of a new 250-bed Dr Joyce Laboso Mother and Child hospital.
The Dr Joyce Laboso Mother & Child Hospital was commissioned by President William Ruto, with Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale joining the President during the event.
The Level 4B facility is expected to provide specialised services for mothers and children, including paediatric care, critical care, surgery and modern diagnostic services.
The hospital has also been equipped with key medical equipment to support the services being offered.
These include a CT scan, digital X-ray, ultrasound machines, intensive care unit (ICU), laboratory equipment and theatre equipment.
The facility is also expected to receive an MRI machine through the National Equipment Service Programme.
Hospital to serve families under Taifa Care
The hospital has been fully empanelled under the Social Health Authority (SHA), allowing families to access its services through the Taifa Care financing arrangements.
The development is expected to reduce the distance families in Bomet and neighbouring counties have to travel when seeking specialised treatment for mothers and children.
It is also expected to ease pressure on existing referral hospitals in the South Rift, which handle patients referred from different parts of the region.
The new facility comes as the government continues to expand health infrastructure as part of its Universal Health Coverage agenda.
With its focus on maternal and paediatric services, the hospital is expected to strengthen access to specialised care while increasing the region’s capacity to handle patients requiring more advanced treatment.
