The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has secured a 15-year prison sentence for Lawrence Gesore Sagero, who was convicted of murdering his wife, Nancy Mongina, in Nyamira County.

The court was informed that Sagero murdered Mongina on April 18, 2024 at about 9 am in Borioba Village, Borangi Location, Nyamira North Sub, County.

During the trial, Sagero pleaded not guilty, the prosecution through Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Joel Kibet Chirchir, presented evidence to the effect that the accused was behind the murders. The State called six witnesses to connect the accused with the killings.

A doctor who conducted the post-mortem examination told the court that Mongina died from severe head injuries caused by blunt force trauma, resulting in cardiovascular arrest.

Medical evidence showed that she sustained repeated blows to the head, fracturing her skull and causing extensive bleeding in the brain.

Justice Cherere ruled that the nature and severity of the injuries demonstrated malice aforethought, establishing the elements of murder under Section 203, as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code.

In determining the sentence, the judge considered the seriousness of the offence and the mitigation circumstances presented by the defence.

She said the circumstances justified a substantial custodial sentence, although mitigation warranted a term below the maximum prescribed by law.

Sagero has 14 days to appeal the sentence.
