The Ministry of Defence has reiterated its commitment to continue supporting military veterans in various aspects of their lives, in line with the Military Veterans Act 2022 (Chapter 199A).

This legislation establishes a structured framework for addressing veterans’ affairs, ensuring they have access to essential benefits, including the Dependents’ Education Fund.

Earlier this week, Major General (Rtd) Lucas Tumbo, Chairperson of the Military Veterans Advisory Committee, and Brigadier Moses Leriari, Director General of the Directorate of Military Veterans (DMV), held a meeting with veterans from Kenya’s Coastal Region.

The meeting was part of an ongoing outreach initiative aimed at bringing together honourably retired military personnel from different regions.

During the event, Major General (Rtd) Tumbo expressed his appreciation for the sacrifices made by veterans during their service, underscoring their critical role in the strength and success of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

“Our veterans are the very embodiment of national pride. You have stood at the forefront, defending our sovereignty, promoting peace, and upholding the values we hold dear. Your dedication, courage, and resilience are the pillars of Kenya’s national security,” said Maj Gen (Rtd) Tumbo.

“The transition to civilian life can be difficult, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that you receive the support you deserve,” he added.

Brigadier Leriari discussed the core principles of the DMV, which focus on honouring veterans, aiding their transition to civilian life, and ensuring access to vital benefits.

He highlighted the DMV’s ongoing efforts to advocate for improved social security, better medical services, and psychological support for veterans.

“Our nation owes you a debt of immeasurable gratitude, and it is crucial that we not only recognize your efforts but also ensure your contributions are never forgotten,” Brigadier Leriari said.

Lieutenant Colonel Franco Otiso, Deputy CEO of the Defence Savings and Credit Co-operative Society (DESACCO), also addressed the veterans, emphasizing the importance of financial independence in retirement.

He encouraged them to manage daily expenses, invest wisely, and avoid drastic lifestyle changes after retiring.

The event was attended by veteran officers and service members from Mombasa, Lamu, Kwale, Kilifi, and Taita Taveta counties.
