Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has unveiled a bomb-disposal robot to detect and dispose of explosives in the country. This acquisition occurs at a time when security issues and terror attacks are on the increase.

This was made public today, March 3, at the Eldoret International Show, where DCI officers demonstrated the robot’s capabilities and other measures put in place to ensure citizens’ safety.

This robot, referred to as a Bomb Disposal Robot or Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) robot, works remotely to keep officers at a safe distance in case of bomb disposal.

This robot works remotely with officers controlling it using joysticks and video displays. Moreover, the robot can conduct real-time checks using cameras equipped with infrared and zoom lenses. The robot’s tank-like tracks allow it to travel over rough terrain and climb stairs.

Its main equipment for disposing of explosives is an arm with the capacity to lift, cut, and place explosives to dispose of them in a safe manner. Furthermore, the robot can use a high-pressure water jet to dispose of explosives.

The prices of these machines vary. For the basic ones, prices range from Ksh 6.5 million to Ksh 14 million. Medium-range ones cost between Ksh 14 million and Ksh 32.5 million. Finally, high-range ones cost between Ksh 33 million and Ksh 70 million. Popular ones, such as Remotec Spartan or Remotec Talon, cost around Ksh 33.5 million.

Terror threats in Kenya have also been on the increase. In February this year, the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) seized weapons and explosives meant to be used in a terror attack in Nairobi.

Tensions between countries such as Ethiopia and Sudan, together with the Middle East crises, have also put a lot of pressure on the Kenyan authorities.

The DCI stated that this robot will ensure that law enforcement agents handle explosives safely and protect citizens from harm. “This bomb-disposal robot enables us to respond to threats without risking lives,” said a senior officer during the demonstration.

This is not the first time that the country has incorporated new technologies in its efforts to keep citizens safe.
