Kenya’s ambition to become Africa’s digital hub received a major boost as the Chinese telecom and digital infrastructure giant Guodong Group announced  its plans to establish its Africa headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, an investment program worth to be Ksh 38.8 billion (US$300 million).

Guodong Group’s entry and investment are expected to enhance Kenya’s digital infrastructure sectors, with interest in telecommunications towers leading to expanding mobile coverage and smart cities that include integration with Konza Technopolis.

Data centers and cloud services will enhance regional digital capacity. It will also support Kenya’s digital fiber networks and promote green digital technologies that are aimed at sustainable infrastructure.

The government’s Digital Superhighway program targets 100,000 km of fiber optic rollout, aligning directly with the company’s vision.

Principal Secretary of the State Department for Investment Promotion, Abubakar Hassan, said the proposed investment comes as Kenya seeks to position itself as a regional hub for digital infrastructure.

“One of the core pillars of the BETA Agenda is the Digital Superhighway. We are committed to laying about 100, 000 kilometers of fibre optic cable across the entire country,” Hassan said.

The proposed African headquarters positions Kenya as a base from which Guodong serves other markets on the continent, increasing the country’s role as a regional center for digital infrastructure investments. The investment hosted by Guodong Group will strengthen Kenya’s position as a regional technology hub, with Kenyans benefiting from faster connectivity, more digital opportunities and the creation of new jobs.
