Acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie has shared empowering advice for young women, urging them to make thoughtful and intentional decisions when it comes to choosing a life partner.
While speaking at the Dream Count event, Adichie emphasised that a romantic partner can deeply influence a woman’s personal growth and long-term well-being. She cautioned against entering relationships out of pressure from family or society, noting that doing so often leads to regret and emotional stagnation.
“Who you choose to journey through life with can either elevate you or hold you back,” she said. “It’s important not to let fear or external expectations dictate such a vital choice.”
She expressed concern over the common tendency among women to ignore clear red flags due to fear of being alone. According to Adichie, many women compromise on their happiness in the name of settling, when they should be prioritising alignment, values, and emotional safety.
Encouraging women to remain rooted in their self-worth, she stressed the need for personal independence and clarity of purpose. She reminded her audience that one’s happiness and definition of success should never be tied solely to relationship status.
“There are still good men — kind, respectful, and emotionally present — out there,” she added, offering hope and reminding women that healthy, supportive love still exists.
