American hip-hop artist Chance the Rapper has expressed his admiration for Kenya’s fight for independence, the Mau Mau, after visiting Nairobi National Museum and the freedom movement, describing it as an important and successful revolt against British colonialism.
Chance, who is accompanied by his family, shared photos of several exhibits, including displays on freedom fighters such as Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi and the Land and Freedom Army.
He urged that this history must be taught to children, emphasizing its significance in shaping Kenya’s path to independence.
“Today we went to Nairobi to learn more about the Land and Freedom Army, popularly known as the Mau Mau. The history of this incredibly important and successful violent revolt against British colonialism and subjugation must be taught to your children,” Chance said.
Chance has been touring and engaging with African culture, often highlighting historical and social justice themes. He has also amplified the global awareness of African liberation movements that are underrepresented in mainstream narratives.
On his tour to Kenya, he has visited Diani Beach in Mombasa and local grocery stores in Nairobi, with his late tour at Nairobi National Museum.
