Catholic Bishops Warn of Political Thuggery

Catholic bishops in Kenya have called on the government to take urgent action to curb rising cases of political goonism as the country heads towards the August 2027 General Election.

In a statement issued in Nairobi, the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) led by Maurice Muhatia wrote to government that the country is sliding into a culture of violence and political intolerance. 

One year to the polls, the bishops expressed deep fear over more incidents of unrest that had been witnessed in different parts of the country including worship and community gatherings. The bishops said that these kinds of acts are threats to national unity and democractic values. 

The clerics condenm the usd if inflammatory language among political leaders, citing that divisions between communities. According to bishops, insults fuel hostility and division among the citizens. They called on leaders to show restraint and encourage peaceful living together. 

Furthermore, they argued they argued that cost of living has become a matter of serious concern especially the prices of fuel which they ask the government to look at ways of cushioning Kenyans from the effects of global tensions particularly in the Middle East.

When it comes to health care, they disclosed that Catholic organizations are owed Sh5. 7 billion including Sh3. 3 in arrears from the defunct NHIF, urging swift settlement of the debts.
