A man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for killing his 74-year-old father following a domestic dispute in Bomet County.
Michael Kerich was sentenced by the Bomet High Court after pleading guilty to manslaughter in a plea-bargaining agreement.
Court proceedings revealed that Kerich attacked his father while he was asleep at night, inflicting fatal injuries using a panga.
He had initially been charged with murder contrary to Sections 203 and 204 of the Penal Code before agreeing to plead guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter.
During sentencing, the prosecution, led by Counsel Judith Koech, urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence, citing the circumstances surrounding the killing.
Koech also presented a victim impact statement detailing the psychological distress and trauma suffered by the deceased’s family following the loss of their loved one.
After considering the prosecution’s submissions, Justice Julius Ng’arng’ar sentenced Kerich to 30 years’ imprisonment.
The sentence was secured by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
