Former U.S. President Barack Obama has paid a moving tribute to the late former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a “true champion of democracy” and a leader whose legacy of sacrifice and patriotism will endure for generations.

Writing on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Obama acknowledged the values of freedom, justice, and good governance that were prominently reflected in Odinga’s entire life journey.

“He was a child of independence, and for many years he had to endure the fight and the giving up of his own but for the larger cause of freedom and self-governance in Kenya,” Obama remarked.

Barack Obama, the 44th U.S. President, whose father came from Kenya in Luo Land, pointed out that it was very clear to him that Odinga was a man who loved his country and was always for Kenya first and progress before power.

“I would even say from my own experience, he was constantly making those moves that put his country’s welfare ahead of his plans. Unlike very few leaders anywhere, he did not mind opting for peaceful reconciliation albeit with no compromise on his principles,” Obama added.

He commended Odinga’s power not only in Kenya but over the whole continent and even outside Africa, calling him a source of light and an inspiration for committed leadership.

“Without doubt, the life story of Raila was the model not only for Kenyans but also for all African nations and the entire globe. One thing I am certain of is that people will miss him very much,” Obama remarked.

Obama expressed sympathy on behalf of his household:

“Michelle and I would like to let the family know that we are with them during this trying time and also Kenyan people.”
