The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition has adopted a new name, Ukombozi Alliance, as the political outfit begins restructuring ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The announcement was made by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka during a press briefing on Monday, September 21, in the presence of other coalition leaders, including Siaya Governor James Orengo.

“This is the beginning of a new era and henceforth this alliance will not be known as the Azimio La Umoja Coalition; our name will now be the Ukombozi Alliance,” Kalonzo stated.

The new political party will adopt the slogan “One Term, One Team, One Coalition,” he added.

This is in response to efforts by the coalition to restructure and widen its base before the next election. The Azimio coalition was set to embark on a massive rebranding and restructuring of its structures and policy framework.

Among other things, Kalonzo stated that the consultations will begin on Tuesday, September 22, between the Ukombozi Alliance and the Jubilee Party.

Additionally, Kalonzo stated that the power tools of the Azimio la Umoja coalition will be officially handed over to the new coalition in the coming days.

The rebranding follows a period of changes within the coalition, including discussions around the position of former President Uhuru Kenyatta in the political outfit after a recent High Court ruling concerning retired presidents and party leadership. Kalonzo had said the coalition would consider the implications of the ruling through its own organs.

The coalition has also been expanding its political network.

Kalonzo said more parties would join the Ukombozi Alliance, including the Umoja na Maendeleo Party (UMP), led by former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

Azimio had previously announced plans to invite UMP and several other political parties into its expanded political formation as it prepared for the 2027 election period.

The latest changes mark a new phase for the coalition, which was formed ahead of the 2022 General Election and is now seeking to reorganise its political structures as the country heads towards another election.
