Police in Muhoroni Sub-County have arrested three suspects on Friday linked to a violent attack on Chemelil Academy that left several people injured and school property vandalised.

The suspects are accused of being part of a gang that stormed the institution on Thursday attacking teachers, parents and workers before destroying property and stealing valuables, including cash and mobile phones.

The brazen daytime raid triggered panic at the school, with several victims sustaining injuries as the attackers, armed with crude weapons, unleashed terror within the institution’s compound.

The arrests come as security agencies step up operations against criminal gangs and hired goons following a recent rise in violent incidents reported in different parts of the country.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja recently directed police commanders across the country to intensify the crackdown on criminal gangs, warning that the growing use of hired goons posed a serious threat to public order and security.

Kanja said police would not only pursue those carrying out attacks but also individuals suspected of financing and organising criminal gangs.

The Chemelil Academy attack sparked outrage among residents and education stakeholders, with many questioning how such a large group of attackers managed to invade a learning institution and assault staff and visitors in broad daylight.

Police say investigations are ongoing and more arrests are expected as detectives work to establish the motive behind the attack and identify all those involved.

The arrest of the three suspects is likely to be seen as an early test of the National Police Service’s renewed pledge to stamp out organised gangs and restore public confidence in security operations.
